OCR: 4) High efficiency is possible, but at the expense of much greater complexity in the boiler, particularly the boiler controls. It is also difficult to design cost effective boilers which will withstand the high temperatures (for efficiency) and pressures (for small size) required. 5) It is interesting to note that many electric generating powerplants use the steam turbine cycle, which is limited in its efficiency in the same ways as the reciprocating steam engine. However, by using very high temperatures and a more sophisticated steam cycle, they achieve very high efficiencies, on the order of 40-50%. However, this is cone at the expense of being able to vary load quickly, as is required in most other applications.
